While the business may be more than half-a-century old, Peppard Building Supplies, is working hard to remain competitive with forward thinking marketing strategies that plays to the Reading-based builders merchant’s strengths.

The latest example of which is a new website that marries the company’s traditional focus on individual customer service, with latest technology. The site allows customers 24 hour access to their accounts, information on 5,000 products and a special section to ask technical questions of Peppard’s resident experts, day or night.

“While it wouldn’t be feasible to open our store 24/7, we know that builders and property developers are busy people and need information outside of normal office hours,” said Ru Butler, Peppard Building Supplies’ Sales and Marketing Director.

“Our customers can log in to their own personal account day or night and find whatever they need for the job in hand.” This thought process and actions are going to from a key part of our strategy on the way forward.

The online relaunch comes as part of a larger marketing drive which the independent builders merchant hopes will help it compete with the bigger names in the industry.

Working within a very competitive market, the 52 year-old family run business is well aware of how important it is to stay ahead of the game and brought in external help from Tony Crutcher Ltd, a specialist sales and marketing service provider who recommended key changes to strategy that included better communication through social media and public relations.

“The independent sector is very much in vogue with builders and property developers looking for simple up front deals in a competitive market but with better old fashioned service values.” This is something that is difficult to achieve over a national company of hundreds of outlets.

“Large national builders merchant chains cannot by their very definition be the same of as one off merchant outlets and I think the recession in the builder’s merchant market has favoured regional merchants”.  Peppard Building Supplies has a major advantage over the national companies – a close detailed understanding and relationship with its customers, which it uses to its full advantage. “We think of the relationship with our customers rather than the individual transaction,” said Ru.

“We live in an age where it can be hard to get quality advice, we have retained that old-fashioned sense of customer service that the company started with and it’s something our customers seem to value.”
